Going Digital
The FCC decided on March 22, 2007 to change the date for the implementation of the 12.5 kHz equipment certification rules from January 1, 2005 to January 1, 2013. Manufacturers will be forced to stop producing any radio capable of 25 kHz. The FCC strongly urges licensees to consider migrating directly to 6.25 kHz technology by January 1, 2013 rather than first adopting 12.5 kHz technology and later migrating to 6.25 kHz technology. Deferring the implementation date permits manufacturers to develop and test equipment after the expected finalization of 6.25 kHz standards in the near future.
The switch to digital is obvious; digital has a much clearer sound and far better range than wideband. 6.25 kHz (very narrowband) digital gives the FCC the ability to put three channels in the same frequency band width as the current 25 kHz (wideband), wheras 12.5 kHz (narrowband) only allows for two channels. Because of this advantage, the FCC is urging customers to switch directly to 6.25 kHz.
