SCADA Introduction

The use of telemetry is a rapidly growing concept in the communications field and J & K Communications is an industry leader throughout the Midwest with our SCADA industrial system, short for Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition. SCADA provides you with remote control and data acquisition from remote locations. Power companies are using it for monitoring and controlling electrical substations, cities are monitoring utilities sewage flow, water flow and water tanks, and natural gas companies monitor gas pipelines.

Service Contracts:
If your 911 system goes down, or your lift station suddenly stops sending you level and flow readings, then call J & K. We can provide you with a service contract for 24 hours/365 days a year service on your communication and data acquisition equipment. Our trained professional technicians will be paged and call you back to diagnose your problem, run a service call, and get your equipment back up and communicating just as soon as we can.

Our Service Contracts are widely used among our customers. We provide contracts for several government entities including City Utilities, Police and Sheriff's Departments, Highway Departments, school systems, electrical cooperatives, and public transportation businesses.

SCADA Propagation Studies

J & K is known for designing, supplying and servicing quality data and voice radio communication systems. We have performed numerous physical propagation studies in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky and even one physical propagation study on the island of Maui. This experience includes a wide variety of terrain and vegetation from very rural to large cities.

The physical portion of a study consists of transmitting a calibrated 150 MHz, 450 MHz or 900 MHz MAS or Spread Spectrum signal from one end of every path. The transmitting antenna system will exhibit the same overall gain as the proposed systems locating the antenna in it's proposed location. The signal level is measured at the other end of the path at various heights at the exact proposed location. The optimum time of year to perform studies is during the season when leaves are fully developed, providing the highest resistance to RF propagation normally found through the year. These conditions facilitate the most accurate and useful study.

J & K also provides system design recommendations and recommended antenna heights including the following considerations:

Reliable communications paths year round for all RTU sites to its respective master station

15 year path design goal

Specialized antenna systems such as top mounted water tower antennas designed to eliminate welding to tanks

A radio design diagram is included with each study which depicts the system layout and includes the recommended antenna heights. The intent of the diagram is to provide a non-technical view of the entire system at a glance. The installer must always measure the received signal strength and adjust the antenna orientation and height in order to maintain system integrity.

Also included in our reports are site drawings, site pictures, all signal strength readings taken during the study, longitude and latitude coordinates, and the antenna orientation.
